MIDNIGHT BROTHERS

(Photo: Google pics)
It was midnight, darkness was engulfing the place. It was a moonless night with the clouds covering the sky when a young woman with her face carefully hidden under her shawl and securely holding her newborn twin boys in her arms went towards the isolated field which divided the temple and the mosque. Her eyes were swollen with tears, her lips still trembling, but the fear of not getting accepted back in the society made her keep her newborns in that field. Before turning her back, she bestowed all her motherly love for those two little bunch of joys, who were unaware of getting orphaned. She put off her pendant and her armlet and put it on each on each boy and left silently.

The next day as the morning broke and the sun ray wiped away the dark night, The Pandit and the Maulvi came towards the field as they heard two cries. They both came forward only to see two beautiful baby boys crying. The Pandit took the one with the pendant and the Maulvi took the one with the armlet. It was the time when there was a great rift between the Hindus and the Muslims, and these two religious people were too corrupted with the same hatred. Without saying a word they moved to their respective places.

The Pandit named the boy Achutya while the Maulvi named the other boy Aasir.
Both grew with great love from their respective guardians, but their hearts were cursed with great hatred-Achutya's for Islam, and Asir's for Hindus. And this was resulted due to the manipulation of their guardians.

Time slipped just like a handful of sand, and the boys were now young with hot blood in their veins. Unaware of their brotherhood, they hated each other. Aasir joined the Muslim League and Achutya joined the Congress.
Then came the most unlucky day of Indian history-The Partition.
There were riots and fights. And among them were two unaware brothers.

The fight got uglier. Asir and Achutya who were stirred up with their childhood resent for each other were fighting fiercely. Nobody had ever seen such hatred for anyone. Both of them knew that the fight would end at the cost of one of their blood. Least they knew that their blood was same.

And the fight did end, but with the blood of two brothers, and they stabbed each other with their knives. As the fell over the ground, Achutya's pendant and Aasir armlet got tangled together. Maybe even the lifeless metal wanted to see the brothers together.

The riot ended, the land was calm with the blood of people. Just then, an old woman was passing by when some gold reflected her eyes. She took no time to identify the metals tangled with each other, while her sons laid lifeless on the ground, leaving their mother to mourn at their deaths.
